Süßes oder Saures

I haven’t written these past few days because, let me tell you.. I have been busy! Busy in a good way of course. But Iet me update you guys.

Halloween?

Let’s start with halloween. On Halloween my host parents invited 6 or 7 of their kids’ friends and their parents over to the flat and we ate dinner. After dinner I went trick-or-treating with my host dad and the kids. I actually learned a lot about halloween on this day. Halloween isn’t a big day here like it is in America. It was introduced about 10 years ago. I found this surprising because growing up, Halloween was a big thing in my school and at home. And instead of saying trick-or-treat the kids in Germany say “Süßes oder Saures” (sweets or sours).

November 1st – 2nd.

The last couple of days after Halloween it was mostly a time for me to settle in to my new home and venture outside the flat with my host mom to see what’s around. My host mom and I went to the mall in the city (I can’t remember the name of the place) and I got a sim card for my phone because I couldn’t get any kind of cell service outside of the house unless I had wifi. We also went and got my “Verbundpass” or “composite pass” in english. With this pass I can travel using the bus and train in a certain zone in Stuttgart for a whole year .This pass was perfect but the price was astonishing. It cost 600 euros. And even though I am signed up for a language class 4 days a week, they wouldn’t give me a student discount. Fortunately, my host mom paid for my bus pass which I am really grateful for because I didn’t have enough money saved up to be able to afford that. This is a perfect example of why my parents were always saying, “Start saving up your money, Airiel, so that you have some extra money while you’re there”. So if I have any future au-pairs reading this, save up as much as you can! You’ll thank me later, I promise.
